Director Ranjith Sankar comes up with his 4th film ‘Punyalan Agarbathis’ which is  a comic entertainer & socially relevant film. Coming to his 4th venture, it is different from his earlier films in the sense that it’s a comic entertainer but it has the elements of social importance & sattire.

Joy Thakklolkaran (Jayasurya) is a young enterprenuer from Thissur who wishes to be rich. He starts an insence stick factory & markets incense sticks named ‘Punyalan Agarbathis’  which is in fact made from elephant dung.He keeps himself afloat with the money his wife Anu(Nyla Usha) makes from her job where she has to work hard.Joy has a companion Greenu Sharma (Aju Vargheese) who considers Joy as his role model. Joy agreed to take elephant dung from the devaswom & later they disagree to give him what he needs since he is a Christian. He fights it out in the court with the help of his advocate Sai(Rachana Narayananankutty) while he tries to get elephant dung from other sources. He finally succeeds in the case . But all these were just a beginning . Things are yet to come.

The film is suitable for all types of audience especially for the family audience. The Thrissur slang in the dialogues work out well in entertaining the people & the elements of sattire towards the present day society too works out well. The film do contain lot of things about social commitment & of course lot of funny moments to entertain us.

‘Punyalan Agarbathis’ is a perfect watch if you are not in a mood to dig out the very minute flaws which can be neglected.

Performance

Jayasurya is coming up with good roles & best performance. He is the winner of the show. It is his performance & dialogue which makes the film more lively. He renders able support to the script especially in handling the Thrissur Slang language & by rendering  beautiful performance.Nyla Usha was good as Anu.Sreejith Ravi ‘s performance was good & also T G Ravi’s. All the other cast did their roles in a very good manner which makes ‘Punyalan Agarbathis’ a colourful entertainer.

Music

Music from Bijibal renders ample support. The song  ‘Aashichavan..’ sung by Jayasurya has become a hit already. The background score entertains the audience further as it gives proper support to the mood of the film. The songs do arrive at the right places.

Technological Aspects

Sujith Vasudev’s cinematography & Lijo Paul’s editing was excellent. Sujith Vasudev captured the life of Thrissur in his camera.

Direction & Screenplay

The screen play was good which makes ‘Punyalan Agarbathis’ a neat watch. Ranjith Sankar in his 4th films proves again with superb direction. Good Work Team ‘Punyalan Agarbathis’

Verdict: Nice Work.Good Entertainer, good humour & sattire.  Go watch it. You won’t be disappointed.

After Celluloid , Kamal Comes With Nadan Which Highlights The History of Drama & Dramatists

Director :  Kamal

Music     :  Ouseppachan

Starring : Jayaram,Sajitha Madathil..

Script      : S Suresh Babu

Our Rating : 3.25/5

After Celluloid - A Tribute to father of Malayalam Cinema , director Kamal comes with his new venture Nadan which zooms into the history of professional dramatists & a professional theatre artist.

Devadas Sargavedhi (Jayaram) is a professional dramatist who had inherited his passion from his father Bharathan  (Hareesh Peradi). He runs a drama troup 'Sargavedhi' which was once a very famous drama troup which consisted of dedicated dramatists. He was a state award winning actor. Now they are in a not so comfortable position. Devadas , as husband is a failure. His wife Sudharma (Sajitha Madathil) left him taking with her , his two daughters. So his personal life too is off the track. There are people like KPAC Radhamani ( KPAC Lalitha), KPAC Abu backer (Chembil Ashokan) who still goes on with Sargavedhi but whereas people like Jyothi  ( Remya Nambeeshan) & GK (Joy Mathew) have moved to the world of cinema. All these form the plot of Nadan which mainly describes the life of Devdas as an artist & as a person.

Nadan of course is an appreciable work but if the script had been handled a bit more better way , the film would have been much engaging. There are lag at places & few unwanted elements. It becomes melodramatic towards the climax. There is nothing much in the movie for mass audience & it is a good watch for the others despite the lag.
All together Nadan is a good movie which has some flaws but the intention in making Nadan makes it a good watch.

Performance

Jayaram was good as Devdas. Sajitha Madathil also renders her full support through acting.KPAC Lalitha impresses us with her performance & others all tried to do their roles in a good manner.

Music

The background score suits the mood of the film but the songs won't last in our mind for long. Unlike the songs of celluloid, songs in Nadan is not much impressive.

Technical Aspects

Madhu Neelakandan have done a brilliant job in doing cinematography. Also the art director helped us to feel the atmosphere.

Screenplay

S Suresh Babu who have scripted Nadan could have taken much care to make Nadan , a much more better one.

Direction

Kamal, as always does his direction part in a very good manner but if he had  given a bit more concentration on the script & made some changes , Nadan would have been an excellent one. Even though Nadan impresses to an extent, it won't gain space among Kamal's unforgettable movies.

Verdict:  Nadan as a Whole is Good Tribute to Dramatists. Impressive to an extent , but not                         extraordinary.

Rating :  3.25/5
